From the Earth, a Cry by Ian Kenneally (New)

Description
When JFK addressed the Irish nation in 1963, he quoted John Boyle O'Reilly (1844-1890), one of Ireland's remarkable and least known historical figures. Born in County Meath, the first part of his life is almost pure adventure. A journalist in his youth, he became an undercover Fenian while ostensibly a proud member of the British army. On his discovery in 1866 he was convicted of treason and taken prisoner before being transported to Freemantle, Australia. His life as a convict, a daring escape on an American whaler, and his subsequent adventures make for a stirring story. After settling in Boston, O'Reilly was employed by the Irish-Catholic paper, the Boston Pilot, becoming editor and joint owner. He turned the paper into one read and respected across America, becoming more an American patriot but never losing belief that Ireland should be free. He helped plot the Catalpa rescue of six more Fenians from Australia. Maintaining a firm hatred of empires, he devoted much time to opposing racism and prejudice. As a writer, O'Reilly formed friendships with literary figures such as Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde. But what really made O'Reilly's name were his journalism and newspaper campaigns. This first complete study of O'Reilly's short but extraordinary life is an exciting, compelling account of a life previously lost in time.
